Influential Events:
☠ Childhood Abandonment: Trolls are raised by enormous, white beasts called lusii. A normal troll/lusus relationship would resemble a strange, familial partnership. The young troll tends to their lusus, much like an animal trainer or zookeeper would any large animal under their supervision. In turn, the lusus looks after and raises their charge, teaching it the life lessons and living habits needed to survive. Unfortunately, Gamzee’s relationship with his lusus was strained at best. Gamzee happens to be near the very top of the hemospectrum (which is the troll equivalent of an old-fashioned social class structure - one’s place at the top or bottom of the social hierarchy is determined by the color of their blood), making him what’s known as a “highblood”. The very top rungs of the hemospectrum are reserved for sea-dwellers, which are finned trolls that reside mostly underwater. Since Gamzee is the highest-blooded land-dweller on the hemospectrum, his lusus is appropriately a seagoat, who is able to survive both on land and underwater. That being said, Gamzee’s lusus chose to spend a majority of its time at sea (save for a few sparse visits), leaving Gamzee behind for most of his life. Despite all of this, Gamzee made it a priority to sit by the water’s edge night after night, keeping an eye out and waiting for any sign of his lusus coming to check up on him. He seemed unfazed by the fact that the goat rarely shows, and is always optimistic that, maybe one time, he’d be able to catch sight of him. Not having a custodian to raise him left Gamzee mostly on his own to raise himself, so he doesn't have the appropriate social skills, manners, or common sense that most trolls would have been taught by their lusus.

☠ Drug Addiction: Gamzee is often likened to a hippie or pothead because of his laid-back, peaceful attitude and for his addiction to an Alternian substance called sopor slime. Sopor originates in trolls’ beds, called "recuperacoons", and surrounds a troll as they sleep, ensuring that they are not plagued by horrific nightmares. It is not to be ingested, and young trolls are normally warned of the brain-damaging effects of eating sopor slime. Gamzee, however, was never taught the dangers of taking sopor internally. He enjoyed baking it into pies, which he ate on a regular basis. Such ignorance resulted in an addiction to the substance’s hallucinogenic and sedative properties, leaving Gamzee on a constant, mind-numbing high. Because he was constantly stoned, Gamzee had a great deal of trouble paying attention, and would often space out in the middle of conversations, or get distracted by things like bright colors or flashing lights.

☠ Mental Breakdown: Gamzee's addiction to sopor slime inadvertently quelled his natural bloodlust caused by his place on the hemospectrum. Being trapped on a meteor restricted his access to more sopor slime, and therefore he became more lucid and sober. After having a crisis of faith where the entire foundation of his religion was violently shaken, he fully realized his true self and went on a murderous rampage. He murdered two of his friends, and taunted and stalked his best friend with promises of more murder. During this time, Gamzee was very delusional, believing he was actually two gods inhabiting one body. His rage was unparalleled, and he sent all of his friends trapped on the meteor with him into a chaotic panic as he roamed around killing anyone he found and later arranging their decapitated heads on display.

☠ Moirallegiance: Karkat was Gamzee's best friend and biggest advocate. Since the beginning, whether he wanted to admit it or not, Karkat would always watch out for his absentminded friend, and ask others to do the same. He spent a lot of time fretting over Gamzee, though he didn't let himself believe it was anything more than a regular friendship, and Gamzee was always vying for more of Karkat's attention. During Gamzee's mental breakdown is when Karkat realized his real feelings, and was able to calm Gamzee down from a homicidal delusion back to his old, sedated self with just a few paps of his hand and a soothing word or two. It was then that Gamzee and Karkat entered a moirallegience, which is basically a mutually beneficial platonic romance between two trolls. This had a profound impact on Gamzee, since it basically halted his breakdown in its tracks, and allowed him to think clearly for the first time since he snapped. This is significant for Gamzee because throughout the rest of the comic, he never flies into a rage like this ever again, and it was also his first romantic relationship.

☠ Puppetmaster: After his rage is quelled, Gamzee's development path gets objectively more wild than any other character's in the entire comic. There aren't specific events that alter his character, per se, so I'll cover a bit of what happens next in this section. He becomes brooding and agoraphobic, choosing to hide in ventilation shafts instead of interacting with anyone else after the humans and trolls come together. After a very strained relationship where Gamzee was barely around (reminiscent of his upbringing), he breaks up with Karkat. He enters a very abusive kismesitude (hate romance) with a girl Karkat was always in love with. He made her feel so badly about herself that she spiraled into depression and changed everything about herself that she once loved. At this time, Gamzee was also moving backwards and forwards in time, orchestrating the rise of the final boss and putting pieces together to make sure said final boss had everything he needed to rule the game. It was also revealed that, for some undetermined amount of time in the midst of all of this, Gamzee was being mind controlled. If this section seems disjointed, it is because Gamzee's character arc at this point was very disjointed and hard to follow. If Gamzee was mind-controlled throughout this entire segment, it would leave him with large gaps in his memory and many people from his homeworld who hate him for apparently (to him) no reason. If he was only mind-controlled for bits and pieces of it, he is a malicious villain that is able to travel through time to manipulate anyone he needs to. Personally, I do not believe he is free of all blame. Gamzee may want to keep to himself and he definitely is not a "normal" teenage troll, but he is mischievous to a dangerous degree, and when he wants something done, he doesn't let things like ethics and morals get in the way. He stabbed Karkat and dumped him into a pit of lava because he was in his way. And then Gamzee got sawed in half with a chainsaw.

Why this path?: No matter what level of sobriety and mental stability, Gamzee has always been and will always be a free spirit. He will deviate from the norm and seek his own calling. What's more, his title in canon is the "Bard of Rage", making the class an even better fit for him. He is seen playing the lute in canon, though his skill with it never becomes apparent. The whimsical, quixotic nature of a bard comes naturally to Gamzee, and he's more of a support role and a wildcard than a front-line fighter. I think it will be interesting to see Gamzee in a position where he can calm other people instead of constantly being the one in a rage, and perhaps his music will have a pleasant effect on him, as well.
